“Everything’s science fiction until someone makes it science fact”
Without a doubt, Warcross is my absolute favorite Marie Lu novel. A spectacular sci-fi novel, filled with twists and turns from start to finish, left me wanting more. From the very first page I was captivated by the world Marie Lu created and completely invested in the characters I met along the way. Warcross is the first book in a duology and was an epic ride that I didn’t want to end. What is Warcross? Warcross is an immersive virtual reality game, that for some it has become a way of life.
Emika is a bounty hunter who is struggling to make ends meet; her rent is three months overdue and she has only $13 to her name. As a bounty hunter she is supposed to track down Warcross players who bet on the game illegally, but there are many bounty hunters around and income from hunting is not stable. When her last bounty hunting goes wrong, desperate for some quick money, she decides to try to hack her way into the opening ceremony of the International Warcross Championship. Instead she glitches herself into the game and becomes an overnight sensation.
Hideo is the young brilliant creator of Warcross. When Emika hacks her way into the opening ceremony of the Warcross International Championship, instead of getting her arrested, he contacts her with an offer she can’t refuse. A bounty with an insane payout that could resolve Emika’s financial problems for the rest of her life.
The cast of characters introduced are very diverse and easy to connect to. Marie Lu has the ability to create characters that the reader will effortlessly fall in love with and root for. Her characters are memorable and intriguing.
Warcross is a perfect blend of sci-fi, cyberpunk, with some dystopian tones. Marie Lu created a virtual world filled with spectacular details that transported the reader into the Warcross space. The novel was a fast-paced, exciting read that kept me captivated until the very last sentence. This book had it all: action, romance, and mystery. It was an outstanding read, unique in its composition, with amazing characters that I am fully invested in and cannot wait to learn more about. The first book created the perfect setting for the sequel giving the reader vague glimpses and clues on what’s to come. Warcross ended on a interesting note, to say the least, and I cannot wait to see what will happen next. While this is considered a young-adult novel, I believe the content will appeal to adult readers as much as teens. If you are a sci-fi geek, regardless of your age, this is the book for you.
